When new patients come in to Orthodontics on Silver Lake, located in Kent County, Delaware, we go over proper tooth brushing techniques with them before starting orthodontic treatment.
We look for plaque build-up, gum health and what type of home care they practice. Brushing and care instructions differ, depending on whether the patient is receiving fixed braces, Invisalign, or retainers. These particular hygiene responsibilities need to be taken up to allow the best outcome.
We and the American Dental Association believe brushing should be done twice a day for two minutes. The tooth brush should be held at a 45 degree angle to the gums. Replacement of the tooth brush every three to four months, and any time you have been sick, is recommended.
A fluoride tooth paste, with an ADA seal, is recommended.
If you are using the correct technique, either a manual tooth brush or an electric tooth brush can be equally effective.
