Orthodontic Mythbusters #2

MYTH: The Best Time to Begin Orthodontic Treatment is the Same for Everybody…

FACT: Dr. Steckel and the American Association of Orthodontists’ (AAO) recommend that a child should receive his or her first orthodontic evaluation by age 7 years. For some young children, NOT ALL, early orthodontic treatment can reduce the time spent in braces and possibly eliminate the need for future tooth extractions. A thorough evaluation can help determine if treatment would be beneficial for the child now or when to start in the future. These days, braces aren’t just for kids, and Invisalign isn’t just for adults!

Fun Bonus– Our new patients will have a great time at their first visit with Dr. Steckel and our OSL team.

While starting orthodontic treatment at a young age can be very beneficial in many ways, it is never too late to achieve a healthy, straight and beautiful smile!

Individualized Treatment Based on Evidence

At Orthodontics on Silver Lake, we believe in evidence-based treatment, meaning that we follow clinical evidence to identify the best treatment options and techniques available for every patient. For each patient we see, we provide a clear explanation of his or her specific orthodontic needs, detailed information about the patient’s options, and expert guidance in making the right decisions.

It’s Never Too Late for Orthodontic Treatment- if you have healthy teeth and gums, and an interest in improving your smile. Call Anna or Annabel today at OSL at (302)672-7776 or visit us at doverorthodontics.com to find out more.

ORTHODONTIC MYTHBUSTERS #1

ORTHODONTIC MYTHBUSTERS #1

MYTH: Orthodontists run behind schedule and keep you waiting for your appointment.

FACT:  There can be orthodontic emergencies that change and slow the schedule. However, those should be few and far between.

OSL patients in Dover, DE can rely on us to see them at their appointment time IF

They arrive 5 mins before their appointment to brush their teeth, and then we’ll get started for their planned adjustment.

In fact, patients and parents frequently compliment us at OSL and appreciate our efforts to see them on time!  #betteratthelake #teamosl

IF our patients cannot arrive on time, then we ask them to communicate this change as soon as possible so we can find an appointment option to accommodate them.

A recent study of orthodontic patients showed that those patients with good oral hygiene and shorter treatment times had better attendance at appointments than those who did not brush well and/or who had longer treatment plans.*

So -if you’re a good brusher, and you are ready to start your orthodontic treatment with Invisalign®, then call Team OSL at (302)672-7776, doverorthodontics.com

If You See Pink…Go to the Sink!

If you see pink…go to the sink!
All of our patients at Orthodontics on Silver Lake (OSL) in Dover,DE share one common goal: “White, straight teeth”
And all of us at OSL love helping our patients get there.

Whether you use a power or manual toothbrush or interdental brush; rubber tip or dental floss, or water pik; mouthrinse, each of these oral hygiene products have instructions to follow for the best results.

Optimum Results=Plaque-free teeth, non-bleeding gums, and fresh breath
Poor Results=Plaque and food particles left on the teeth and surface of your tongue. The bacteria in your mouth then break down the food particles, releasing chemicals that have a strong odor leading to bad breath.
One way to check that your oral hygiene efforts are working is to use a pink disclosing tablet after brushing and flossing. This tablet produces a harmless pink stain that clings to plaque, the film of bacteria that is always forming on the teeth and gums. It is a built in check for the user to see where he/she missed brushing.  If you see pink…go to the sink, and brush off the plaque to reveal your clean teeth.
If Dr. Steckel recommends a mouth rinse for you, then it’s best used after your teeth are completely clean.
Any questions? Call us at (302)672-7776 to speak with Anna or Annabel to take the first step to your “White, straight teeth”

“I have 2 rows of teeth”

Baby teeth are great space holders for our permanent teeth… until they are not!
We generally lose all of our baby teeth by age 12 years of age.
If they are not lost on schedule, eruption problems with our permanent teeth can occur.
Dr. Steckel sees patients starting at 7years of age and older to evaluate growth, jaw patterns, function, baby teeth, and esthetics to properly time the start of orthodontic treatment.
The patient below  was 15 years old at his first appointment and he had 2 baby teeth.
The baby teeth blocked the permanent teeth and forced them to erupt on his palate. The baby teeth were removed and then the patient started Teen Invisalign therapy. He wore his aligners and finished with all permanent teeth aligned, and a
great smile!
The patient’s comments: “Getting braces was tough at first, but after a while you get used to it. I developed good oral hygiene habits. The appointments are relatively quick and simple with friendly service.” -D.H.
Take HomeTiming is everything- especially with baby teeth. If you have any questions about baby teeth and Teen Invisalign treatment, call us at OSL (302)672-7776.

Make Space, Reduce Treatment Time and Keep Your Teeth!

Orthodontic treatment enhances the attractiveness of your smile, and one way Dr. Steckel can create space for your teeth to straighten is using IPR (=Interproximal Reduction) to “slenderize” your teeth. This procedure also reduces the development of “black triangles” between the teeth-which happens commonly with adult patients.
A research study was carried out to assess dental health after IPR. 43 consecutively treated patients ages 19-71 years of age who had IPR done 4-6 years previously were examined for dental decay. None of them reported sensitivity to temperature after the procedure, and the difference in decay development between the treated (2.5%) and untreated teeth (2.4%) was not significant.*

IPR can be used with fixed braces or Invisalign or Teen Invisalign treatment. The photo below shows one example of IPR:
In summary, IPR is a quick, easy, and low risk procedure with the benefits of saving time and your teeth.

DIY Orthodontics?

About half of adults use the internet to access information regarding their health decisions. However, not all of this information is accurate, or easy to understand. Some information has the potential to be dangerous. There are Youtube videos describing the use of rubber bands, paperclips and other household items for “Do it Yourself” (DIY) orthodontics. (1) PastedGraphic-1

Many authors of orthodontic topics, such as oral hygiene with braces, or treatment with Invisalign are orthodontists. Dr. Steckel publishes this monthly blog on our website to provide accurate, easy to understand, and relevant answers to common questions.

Her sources for these blog topics are the current literature, and clinical experiences in her practice. Please see previous OSL blog posts on February 2015, and May 2014 as examples.

The concern with DIY is the risks of unintended consequences, and gum tissue not being healthy enough for orthodontic treatment. The risks include loss of teeth, damage to gum tissue, and the need for expensive restorative treatment to replace the damaged teeth.

You do not need a referral from your dentist to make an appointment with Dr. Steckel. At your first appointment, she will determine the health of your gums and teeth, and help you choose which orthodontic option will benefit you. Orthodontic treatment can transform your smile, and the foundation for this is healthy gums and good oral hygiene!

Question: What is Clear, Comfortable, and Virtually Invisible?

Question: What is Clear, Comfortable, and Virtually Invisible?
Answer: Invisalign is!
More and more patients at OSL are achieving their orthodontic goals with Invisalign. Dr. Steckel is happy to provide this opportunity for her patients to realize their goals
with this ever-advancing technique.
Advantages for Invisalign:
1. Easier brushing and flossing, less dietary restrictions, no “wire pokes”.
2. Comfortable to wear, and not obvious to most people that you have the aligners on
What patients need to know: It will change your daily routine to some extent. You need to wear them 22 hrs per day to complete treatment on schedule.
Disadvantages of Invisalign:
1. Being consistent with your aligner schedule is very important, or the treatment can take longer or not work.
2. Some patients still need braces on some of their teeth to get the best results. This can be determined at your initial appointment with Dr. Steckel.
A patient is shown below who recently finished Invisalign treatment, and then was able to have restoration with his dentist to complete his perfect smile.
Both he and his dentist were happy with the results achieved:

“Brush up” on Your Knowledge for Children’s Dental Health Month

Children’s Dental Health Month is a great time to “brush up” on dental health knowledge. It is important to brush two times a day, using small circles, for two full minutes. Watch the video below to see how.

A trip to the orthodontist can also be an important part of dental health. Teeth that are aligned properly look and feel good. The ability to speak, chew, and bite, as wellCDHM as good dental health can all be dependent on properly aligned teeth.

If your child’s teeth are not properly aligned, it can lead to dental problems. A check-up, no later than age 7, will help Dr. Steckel provide treatment at the right time in your child’s developmental process. Call us to schedule your child for his or her first orthodontic appointment today! 302-672-7776

Another reason to get orthodontic treatment as an adolescent

Whether fixed braces or Invisalign (R), most patients will have a stage in their treatment where elastics or rubber bands are worn for optimum results.
imgres One recent Case Report in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO) August 2014, Vol. 146, Issue 2, pages 227-237) showed the power of consistent elastic wear with upper jaw expansion in a growing patient. This treatment could not be done with an adult due to limited treatment options available when growth is not happening.
Elastics align the top teeth to properly fit with the bottom teeth, to fix cross-bites, and to finalize the patient’s treatment results. And, (as they did for the patient above) they can play a role in effecting a jaw correction in a cooperative, growing patient.
A literature review comparing treatment effects of different overbite (“Class II”) correcting appliances showed the results are similar when Elastics are compared with Herbst or imgres2Forsus (R) appliances. Using Elastics with Teen Invisalign can also minimize the side-effects seen with these Class II appliances. The elastics are worn full-time and are a light-type elastic. (AlignTech, March 25, 2014: Common Sense Class II Invisalign Teen Treatment; Barry J. Glaser DMD)
NOTE: These results are comparable ONLY in growing patients, not adults. The changes seen in Teen patients are a combination tooth changes (63%) and skeletal changes(37%).
Which type of appliance is most effective? It depends on the individual situation!  We are seeing  excellent results with our motivated Dover Air Base patients!  Call us for a consultation and Dr. Steckel will meet with you and your child to review options before we begin treatment.
