Answers From Your Dover Orthodontist

It’s important to understand the process involved with orthodontic treatment. Here at your local Dover orthodontic office Dr. Steckel has answered ten of the most frequently asked questions in order to ensure your confidence and answer any questions regarding your treatment or procedure. If you have any questions that aren’t answered on this page, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to answer any of your questions.

1. What is the recommended age for an initial orthodontic screening?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic screening at age 7. By this age, several permanent teeth in most children have erupted, allowing us to effectively evaluate your orthodontic condition.

2. What can I expect to take away from the initial examination?

There are five essential questions that we will cover during the initial examination:

    •  Is there an orthodontic problem, and if so, what is it?
    •  What must be done to correct the problem?
    •  Will any teeth need to be removed?
    • How long will the treatment take to complete?
    •  How much will the treatment cost?

3. How long does treatment typically last?

Treatment time obviously depends on each patient's specific orthodontic problem. In general, treatment times range from 8 to 30 months. The "average" time frame a person is in braces is approximately 18-24 months.

4. Do braces hurt?

Although teeth can be sore after certain appointments, braces do not generally "hurt." When patients experience soreness, over-the-counter pain medications such as Advil or Tylenol will ease the discomfort.

5. Can I still play sports while receiving orthodontic treatment?

You are definitely able to continue playing sports, however, we strongly recommend wearing a mouth guard. Without a mouth guard, your mouth is subject to being cut by your braces, and depending on how hard you are hit, you could damage your teeth, which could prolong your orthodontic treatment.

6. Which foods do I have to avoid while I have braces?

Depending upon the orthodontic treatment, we discuss detailed instructions with you and provide a comprehensive list of foods to avoid. Common foods to avoid with braces include: ice, hard candy, raw vegetables and all sticky foods (i.e. caramel and taffy). You can avoid most emergency appointments to repair broken or damaged braces by carefully following our instructions.

7. How often do you recommend I brush my teeth while I have braces?

We recommend patients brush their teeth at least four times a day - after each meal and before going to bed. For patients with braces, we will show you how to floss with braces and may also provide a prescription for a special fluoride, if necessary.

8. I’m an adult, is it too late for me to get braces?

Although beginning orthodontic treatment at a young age has its advantages, it is never too late to achieve that healthy, beautiful smile you’ve dreamed of. A lot of our patients are adults, in fact, 25 percent of all orthodontic patients are adults.

9. Am I able to wear braces even though I have crowns and missing teeth?

Yes. Crowns will move just like a natural tooth with braces. When teeth are missing, Dr. Steckel will plan the orthodontic treatment to aid in the alignment of the remaining teeth.

10. Will I need to have teeth extracted before getting braces?

Depending upon your orthodontic needs, removing teeth may be required to achieve the best result; however, with the latest technology, removing teeth is not always necessary for orthodontic treatment.
